Museums are Essential to the Public Good

The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) was founded in 1906 and now represents more than 4,000 museums of all types and sizes from around the world, and more than 26,000 museum professionals. AAM works on behalf of museums and museum professionals everywhere by promulgating voluntary museum standards and best practices and by championing the cause of museums.  We are proud to serve as a voice for museums everywhere, highlighting their roles as critical educational institutions, vital economic engines, community anchors and providers of many social services.

We believe museums strengthen communities. They educate and inspire, nourish mind sand spirits, and enrich lives. Museums matter because they educate our children and our citizens about whom we are and where we have been. Whether large or small, museums enrich our lives and open possibilities for our future, and they mark what is important to us as communities. The museum experience is characterized by encounters with real objects and primary learning experiences, in welcoming places, supported by scholarship and knowledge. They preserve and protect cultural heritage and society’s treasures for future generations.

At AAM, we believe our strength lies in the diversity of museums and broad range of people we engage and represent globally. A unified field is essential to our collective success. AAM communicates the story of museums’ value through advocacy and provides programs that both nurture institutional excellence and advance museum professionals’ careers.

Excellence in museums is fostered through programs supporting and recognition of museums’ adherence to core standards, called the Characteristics of Excellence. We offer methods and resources for advancing institutional excellence provide staff with a fundamental knowledge of museums and museum practice engage museum professionals in peer-to-peer networking and mentoring promote an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and best practices and address critical issues and trends important to museums. Accreditation offers museums high-profile, peer-based validation of their voluntary adherence to a high standard of operations, increasing credibility and value to funders, policy makers, insurers, and the museum’s community and peers. It helps facilitate loans between institutions, especially international exhibit exchanges. In a constantly changing world, excellence is not stagnant. Our Center for the Future of Museums helps museums shape a better tomorrow by monitoring cultural, technological, political and economic trends of importance to museums equipping museums to help their communities address the challenges of coming decades and building connections between museums and other sectors.

박물관은 공공의 이익에 필수적

미국 박물관협회 (American Alliance of Museums: AAM) 은 1906년에 설립되어 현재 전 세계적으로 4,000개 이상의 다양한 형태와 규모의 박물관과 26,000명의 박물관 종사자를 대변하고 있다. AAM은 자체적인 박물관 관련 기준과 베스트 프랙티스를 제정하여 널리 알리고 박물관의 대의를 수호하는등의 활동을 통해 전 세계 모든 박물관과 박물관 종사자들을 대변해 왔다. 우리는 전 세계 곳곳에서 박물관의 목소리를 대변하고 핵심적인 교육 기관이자 없어서는 안 될 경제의 엔진이며 커뮤니티의 구심점이며 다양한 사회 서비스의 제공자로서 박물관의 역할 강화에 기여해 온 AAM의 역할에 무한한 자부심을 느끼는 바이다.

우리는 박물관이 커뮤니티를 공고하게 만든다고 믿는다. 박물관에서는 사상과 정신을 교육하고 고양시키며 이를 강화하고 삶을 풍요롭게 한다. 박물관이 중요한 이유는 우리의 어린이들과 시민들을 대상으로 자신이 누구이고 우리가 어디에서 왔는지를 가르치는 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있기 때문이다. 규모가 크든 작든 간에 박물관에서는 우리의 미래를 위한 가능성을 열어 주고 우리 커뮤니티에 중요한 것이 무엇인지를 표시하여 기억할 수 있도록 한다.

박물관 경험은 학문과 지식으로 둘러싸인 방문객을 환영하는 장소에서 실질적인 사물과의 조우 및 기본적인 학습의 경험으로 정의할 수 있다. 박물관은 문화유산을 보존하고 보호하며 미래 세대를 위해 사회의 보물을 보존하는 역할을 한다.AAM 에서는 전 세계적으로 우리가 접하고 대표하는 박물관의 다양성과 광범위한 사람들이야 말로 우리의 저력의 원천이라고 믿기 때문이다. 박물관 전체의 성공을 위해서는 해당 분야의 단결과 통합이 필수적인 요건이다. AAM 은 지원 활동을 통해 박물관의 가치를 전하고 박물관의 기관으로서의 역량을 강화하는 동시에 전문적인 커리어를 증진시킬 수 있는 프로그램을 제공하고 있다. 박물관의 우수성에 대한 지원 프로그램과 핵심 기준에 대한 준수 등 뛰어난 특성이라 불리는 요소들을 통해 강화될 수 있다. 우리는 각 기관들이 자체적인 우수성을 강화할 수 있는 방법과 자원을 제공하고 박물관과 박물관의 업무 방식에 대한 기본적인 지식을 갖춘 인력을 지원하며 박물관의 직원들을 위한 동료간의 네트워킹 및 멘토링의 기회를 제공하고 학제 간에 다양한 아이디어와 베스트 프랙티스 교류의 장을 마련하고 박물관 관련 중요 사안 및 트렌드에 대처하기 위해 노력을 기울이고 있다. 승인 절차는 박물관이 자체적으로 준수하고 있는 수준 높은 운영 방식에 대해 비교 평가를 통한 공신력 있는 검증을 통해 기금 후원자, 정책 입안가, 보험사 및 기타 박물관의 커뮤니티 및 동종 기관들 사이에 신뢰도가 가치를 높일 수 있는 수단으로 활용이 되기도 한다. 또한 승인 과정을 통해 박물관 간의 전시 대여, 특히 국제적인 전시 교류를 촉진할 수도 있다.

 빠른 속도로 계속해서 변화하는 세계 속에서 우수성 역시 영원할 수 없다. 미래의 박물관 센터는 박물관에게 중요성을 띄는 문화, 기술, 정치 및 경제적인 트렌드에 대한 면밀한 모니터링을 통해 박물관들이 더 나은 미래를 설계하고 소속 커뮤니티가 당면한 시대의 도전 과제들에 대처해 나가는 데 힘을 실어주는 동시에 박물관과 기타 분야 간에 연계를 구축할 수 있도록 지원하고 있다.
